Like Jet, Damijana held disregard. She did not feel small (although she certainly knew she wasn't big), and did not understand why her adoptive father worried so much. These lands, dangerous to wolves, were a sanctuary for hatchlings such as the play area was to pups. There was nothing to fear here.
With her claws she picked up a frozen twig and chewed on it, sharpening her poking teeth. Against a rock she rubbed her growing horns. They were growing, but were sure to fall off soon due to season.
A beetle, late for hibernation, scurried past her. Without thinking, Damijana took her tail and swat the insect, flicking it into her mouth. She chewed lifelessly, not savoring the taste or texture of the bug. As her tongue did, her yellow eyes looked at the world without the colorful innocence of a newborn, but in black and white such as an old wolf would.
